Roses have been growing on Earth for over 35 million years. Rose oil has been an article of commerce in the Middle East since around the 10th century. When Roses are distilled both Rose Otto and Rose Water are produced. When roses are solvent extracted Rose Absolute is produced. The popular wisdom among therapists is that while Rose Absolute is valuable for its sweet and uplifting perfume, Rose Otto is the more useful therapeutically when used in massage. Rose Otto is cleansing to the skin, the spleen and the liver and has a particular affinity with the female reproductive system. Rose Water is used as a toner in skin care. Sherlock Holmes and Rose Sherlock Holmes took an interest in Roses as can be seen in the following extract from 'The Adventure of the Naval Treaty'. As Sherlock held a rose he spoke thus ‘Our highest assurance of the goodness of Providence seems to me to rest in the flowers. All other things, our powers, our desires, our food, are really necessary for our existence in the first instance. But this rose is an extra. Its smell and its colour are an embellishment of life, not a condition of it. It is only goodness which gives extras, and so I say again that we have much to hope from the flowers.’ |
